So, what is the Grief Recovery Method?

The Grief Recovery Method is an evidence-based program designed to help individuals cope with emotional loss and grief through structured support and actionable steps.

Overview

The Grief Recovery Method (GRM) is a structured program that aims to assist individuals in dealing with the pain of emotional loss, whether from death, divorce, or other significant life changes. It is based on the understanding that grief is a unique and personal experience, and it emphasizes taking actionable steps to process and heal from grief rather than simply waiting for time to heal wounds.

Key Features

Evidence-Based Approach

Research conducted by Kent State University has shown that the Grief Recovery Method is effective in helping individuals manage their grief. It is the only grief support program recognized as evidence-based, meaning it has been scientifically validated for its effectiveness.

Structured Program

Holistic and Inclusive

Holistic and Inclusive

The GRM typically consists of an 8-week group program or a 7-week one-on-one format. Participants engage in a series of sessions that help them to identify and address incomplete emotional business related to their losses.  (There are also other formats, including a 6-week Pet Loss format, a 4-week Helping Children with Loss format, and a 4-week Alumni format.)

Holistic and Inclusive

Holistic and Inclusive

The program recognizes that grief can stem from various types of loss, including the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or other significant life changes. It provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to express their feelings and work through their loss - no matter the cause or source.

Action-Oriented

Holistic and Inclusive

In-Person and Online

Unlike some grief support groups that focus on discussing feelings, the GRM emphasizes taking specific actions to address grief. This includes identifying emotional pain, expressing feelings, and completing incomplete business related to the loss.

All formats are available both in-person and online. For virtual meetings, I use Microsoft Teams, a HIPAA-compliant platform that ensures privacy and security.

What do our GRM sessions Look Like?

Structure

Each week, we meet for approximately 1-2 hours. We begin with the whole group (no more than 12 in person or 9 online) working together and then break into small groups (at least 3) for the more intense work. We start out very general, getting to know each other in order to build trust and a safe space.

There are reading assignments and homework between each session, and that is the key to making these sessions successful. (Books and materials provided by FESM, covered either by fees paid for participation or donations.)  The reading can easily be broken into chunks and the homework can usually be completed in about an hour or so each week. These assignments are vital to success in the program.

After discussing the assignments and getting the assignment for the next week, we open up for questions and dismiss.

Building Up Each Week

Because each week builds on the previous week, and because we are building a safe space and fostering trusting relationships, groups are closed to new participants after week 2. We start out with the basics and get more in-depth and intense as the sessions progress. Although each format differs slightly, I will attempt to lay out a brief overview of what is covered during the program. (This is for the general GRM only, not including Pet Loss and Helping Children with Loss.)

Week 1

Introduction to the GRM and the various formats and books available. We review our participation guidelines/commitments. We talk about why one might be participating in this program and the different definitions and causes of grief. We also review some common terms that participants will need to be familiar with to understand the program.

Week 2

We start with review - since there may be some new people joining this week. We review our commitments and GRM basics. We review and discuss the week's assignment - talking about the alleged stages of grief, common myths and misinformation about grief, and intellectual/spiritual statements we often hear when dealing with grief.

Week 3

This is where we start to really examine ourselves. We introduce STERBs - Short Term Energy Relieving Behaviors. These are things we do that provide temporary relief or distraction.

Week 4

Now we're getting a little more intense. We look into our person loss history. We also look at how grief can affect us not just emotionally, but also physically.

Week 5

Since the homework for Week 4 is reading only, week 5 is a bit of a catch-up week. We spend time wrapping up loss history and how those losses may have affected us. This is the week where we decide what relationship we're going to work out for the remainder of the group.

Week 6 & 7

This is where the intense work really begins. All I can really offer is that THIS is what it's all about! Trust the process!

Week 8

During this final week, everyone gets to share in the completion of the course. I don't want to give it away, but it is intense, sad, beautiful, heartbreaking, freeing, and any other conflicting feelings you can imagine.

Special Notes

Family Members

Due to the nature of discussions in this program, I encourage family members to participate with the understanding that they will be together in the large group, but they will be separated in the small groups.

Missing a Week (or 2)

Since we are building safe spaces and fostering trusting relationships, it is imperative that participants attend every week regularly. However, I totally understand that life happens. So, the program does allow for missing one (1) week (after week 2). If you must miss more than that, you may be asked to attend a different group or sign up for one-on-one sessions.

Why Groups of 12 or 9 (with small groups of 3)

I limit myself to groups of 12 (in person) because of space limitations. The Grief Recovery Institute recommends no more than 9 online, because then we can see everyone at one time. (Nine participants will fit on one screen.) We break the small groups into 3, because if someone would need to miss a week, no one would be left without a partner.
